Wellibites - From incubator to international sales

On a crispy January day, Sara Serray called Yuncture's office for the first time. She had then booked a meeting with our business coaches to pitch her business idea in hopes of getting a spot in our incubator program. Sara had brought a sample of a Wellibite that she had cooked up in her own kitchen. The candy piece did not have the same shape as they have today, and the flavors were also not fully developed. Despite this, our business coaches were completely sold on Sara as a person and her candy piece, so we offered her a spot in the incubator.

There is no direct translation for the word "Wellibites" from Swedish to English, as it seems to be a brand or product name.Founder Sara, who is a trained nutrition and wellness advisor and licensed pharmacist, has always had an interest in baking and health. She therefore began to look more closely at the products that would be a "better" alternative on the market and realized that there was no alternative that was good enough. She then studied ingredients and the research on sweeteners and started experimenting with her own recipes at home in the kitchen. For the next few days, evenings, and nights, she experimented with different batches that were tested by her niece until she had a candy that tasted really good and was healthy.

Sara has always been analytical and questioning. She describes it herself as often thinking in different angles than the ones presented. Here she tells how she was thinking when she stood and experimented in her kitchen.
- I wanted to start my own business but I didn't really know in what field or if it would amount to anything. I could never have imagined that it would turn out like this. In an ideal world, Wellibites would be available in some stores.

She had no previous experience in entrepreneurship. Instead, she made sure to educate herself through Google searches and events. Today, Wellibites has a turnover of approximately 22 million kronor.
- I really sat down at the computer and googled "how to start a business?" and attended events and absorbed as much knowledge as I possibly could. Eventually, I reached a point where I had done as much as I could on my own and sought a community and someone who could help me regularly.

Sara was admitted to the incubator starting in February 2018 with Mats Rydhede and Josefin Rydhede as advisors. At the start of the incubator, she had a candy recipe, a logo, and contact with production and suppliers. During the incubator period, Sara also made contact with several experienced individuals who had worked in the food industry. One of these was Mats Bejmyr, who now runs his own recruitment company within retail towards large chains. Mats became a good sounding board for Sara in her company's start-up.
– I realized early on in the incubator that if nothing happens now, it will never happen. So I quit my job and sold the apartment that I had moved into a month earlier. That decision was obvious even though it didn't feel easy at the time.

"Even if you fly in the beginning, there will come a dip."

With the help of the expertise in the Yuncture incubator, Sara wanted to enter the market, acquire customers, and turn her idea into a finished product to sell.
- That was precisely the help I received. Wellibites was founded in May 2018, and by the end of the incubator, I had a finished product and a turnover of several hundred thousand kronor, she says and continues.
- For Wellibites, Yuncture has been the perfect platform for everything regarding company establishment and getting started for real. My advisors at Yuncture helped me think big and mentally prepared me for facing obstacles in my entrepreneurial journey. Even if you soar at the beginning, there will be a dip, which made it easier for me to get out of the dip when it came.

We asked Sara what tips she would like to give to someone who wants to start a business.
– Surround yourself with people who have done or are doing what you want to do. That will make things easier. Surround yourself with advisors and other entrepreneurs who make you feel inspired. Since summer 2021, Wellibites is a part of the foodtech group Humble Group. Sara is still the CEO and runs the company just as before but with support now.
- Shortly after I was on Dragon's Den, I was contacted by Humble Group. I had previously declined their offer because I didn't feel ready to sell the company. When they contacted me again, I thought it wouldn't hurt to schedule a meeting, she says and continues:
- When we talked, I realized it was a good match. My goal is to create a better and healthier world, and how do I do that best? Well, by reaching out to more people in a short time. That's when I decided that this was the best way.

In the future, Wellibites aims to expand to more countries, while the company grows internally. In 2022, Wellibites plans to generate a revenue of 50 million SEK, and Sara is currently the only employee in the company.
