Detecht wants to save lives and reduce the number of motorcycle accidents.

In September 2018, Niklas Ohlsson and Tobias Goldman entered the doors of Yuncture's office. They run the company Detecht and were about to participate in our five-month incubator program. The first version of the app had been released and they had already reached 5000 downloads. The company was in its early stage and wanted to prepare for an investment through the incubator program in order to take the next step in the project. Where does the company stand today? - We have conducted a digital interview with Detecht's co-founder Niklas.

Tell me more about Detecht.

- Detecht is an app for motorcyclists where we primarily focus on three points, safety, driving functionality, and community. Our main focus is on safety, which is why the app includes a crash algorithm that we have developed in collaboration with researchers from Chalmers. Through this, we can identify motorcycle accidents using the sensors on the mobile phone. Once we have identified an accident, an SOS alarm is automatically notified with the time and location, allowing them to assist the person in question. The goal of the app is to save lives and reduce the number of serious accidents, and we have also added features that simplify your driving and a function where you can connect with like-minded individuals.

How does Detecht's crash algorithm work?

- We always ask our drivers to start the app before they begin a motorcycle ride. That way, you can track and log your route, and in the background, we analyze the sensors on your mobile phone. We continuously analyze values during the ride, and through this, we can detect an accident. When the app detects an accident, an alarm is triggered on the phone, and the driver has 60 seconds to deactivate it before it is sent directly to SOS Alarm or the driver's ICE contacts.

At SOS-alarm, the operator receives our alarm and tries to call the driver to make contact and analyze the situation. Since the driver is often very filled with adrenaline after the accident, they can sometimes have difficulty assessing the situation. Therefore, it is incredibly important that we have SOS-alarm with us, who are professionals in the conversation with the driver. They can analyze beyond the adrenaline rush and send out emergency services if needed.

How did you come up with the business idea?

- We studied at Chalmers Entrepreneurship School and started the project there. We were a team of three students who were connected with researchers from Chalmers who had the foundation of the algorithm. As a newly qualified motorcyclist, I thought it was a great industry to focus on. Previously, there had been discussions about whether to target riders or cyclists. At the same time, there was a legal requirement from the EU that all new cars must be equipped with eCall, which is an automatic emergency call system directly connected to emergency services. We believed that this should also be available for motorcyclists, so we started conducting market research during our study period.

How was the time in the Yunctures incubator program?

- When we joined Yunctures' incubator, it was me and Tobias who ran Detecht together with a consultant. The consultant acted as our CTO initially. During the autumn of 2018, he had developed a first version of the app, and by just promoting the app on social media, we already had 5000 downloads in the first two months.

We were in an early stage and wanted to prepare ourselves to be able to attract an investment to take the next step in the company and accelerate development. During the Yuncture time, we focused on establishing a collaboration with SOS Alarm. It's difficult for small startups to get in touch with big giants and navigate through their hierarchical structure. With Yuncture, we were able to bounce ideas off each other and received help to further the dialogue. We were fortunate to establish a good collaboration with one of the business developers at SOS Alarm. Since he himself rode a motorcycle, he thought our project was important. He became somewhat of a guiding star at SOS Alarm and helped us tremendously.

In 2019, we organized a national pilot project where we began testing our crash alarm directly linked to SOS Alarm. It went well, and since a year ago, we have been directly connected to SOS Alarm through a partnership agreement, as one of the first personal sensor alarms.

Do you have any tips for other startups?

- As previously mentioned, it is difficult for a small startup to break into a large company. It can then be an advantage if you can find someone within the larger company who truly believes in your business idea and can drive the process internally. There are many steps to go through and it is difficult to get in touch with the "right" person.

What challenges have you encountered?

- One of the challenges we have encountered is, for example, being able to finance our own ideas, projects, and products. It has also been a challenge to attract technical expertise and get the development running. Since we have not had a technical core team, we have always moved faster on the marketing and business side. It is only today, with four developers in the office, that we have finally managed to catch up with the technical development.

What can we expect from Detecht in the future?

- We see a global trend where more and more hobbyists are coming together to discuss their hobbies and interests. We are trying to capitalize on this by offering an all-in-one app that includes safety, all the tools you need for motorcycle riding, and a community where you can meet like-minded people. Moving forward, we are focusing a lot on developing the social network within the app.

6 quick with Niklas

Name:Niklas Ohlsson, CEO and co-founder of Detecht

Age:27

Born and raised:Gothenburg.

Leisure interests:Of course, motorcycles. Since my biggest dream since daycare was to get a motorcycle license, it became the first thing I did when I turned 24. Besides that, I love all types of sports.

MotorcycleYes, sure! The translation for "Triumph Street Twin" from Swedish to English is exactly the same as it is in English.

What is on your bucket list?I would love to go on a longer motorcycle vacation. We are planning to do it with the team, hopefully in the summer. Besides that, I have always wanted to start a company and develop it from the beginning into a sustainable, self-financed company. The next big goal is for Detecht to become the biggest motorcycle app in the world.
