What is an investment round and how does it work?

Have you heard of the concept of an investment round and wonder what it is? Or are you perhaps in a situation where it is time to raise external capital for your company? We can help you clarify the concept and share some tips along the way.

What is an investment round?

An investment round is a period of time when a company seeks investments from internal and external actors, such as venture capital funds or angel investors. The purpose of an investment round is to raise capital in order to finance the company's growth and development.

How does an investment round work?

There are different ways to proceed when seeking investments and the appropriate method depends on the company's size, lifecycle, and investment needs. Here we list some common types of investment rounds.

Seed investments

These are the first investments made in a company and they aim to finance the company's start and early growth phase. Seed investments are often made by angel investors or investment firms.

Series round A

After a seed investment, one can make a so-called "Series A round" aimed at financing the company's growth and creating a stable foundation for further development. These investments are often made by venture capital funds.

Comic round B

The next step is "series B funding" to finance the company's continued growth and expansion. These investments are often made by Venture Capital funds and other strategic investors.

Series round C and later

These investment rounds are made in more established companies that have already gone through previous rounds. The purpose of "series C round" and later is to finance the company's continued growth and expansion, as well as to generate returns for the investors. Similar to the above investment rounds, capital injections in this stage are often made by Venture Capital funds and strategic investors.

How does Yuncture invest?

For Yunctures' part, we are happy to enter into early stages, i.e. the seed stage. We do it for the reason of being able to help in the startup journey and to contribute in a good way. However, Yuncture is always open to making a so-called reinvestment in future rounds, in order to maintain a stable position as shareholders for a longer period of time. It also creates security for the entrepreneur to know that existing owners are prepared to invest more capital when needed, instead of constantly having to contact completely new, external investors.

Prepare properly.

If you are interested in applying for investment for your company, it is important that you understand how an investment round works and what type of investment is suitable for your company. It is also important that you have a business plan that you can present in a powerful way to potential investors.

Before you start searching for investment, it is also important that you have a clear idea of what you are looking for and why. You should also have an understanding of how much capital you need and what you plan to do with it. Being well-prepared can help you attract investors and get the financing you need to move your business forward.

How do you assess the value of your company?

It can be complicated to value your company, especially when you are in the startup phase. A good parameter to consider is what you are willing to give up when it comes to ownership. Some want total control over their company, while others are willing to give up more shares to bring in a strong player. This is completely individual and varies from company to company, so consider what feels comfortable for you. For example, if you are willing to give up 10 percent of the company and you need 1 million SEK, then there is a logical reasoning to value the company at 10 million SEK. However, it will always be a negotiation with investors regarding whether it feels reasonable or not, but potential investors appreciate getting an approximate valuation before starting discussions.

Remember that an investment round can be a long and demanding process - so to succeed, you should start early and be well-prepared. Do you want to read more about our investment requirements or perhaps submit an investment inquiry?Click here.
