How We Match Entrepreneurs with Mentors in Yuncture’s Incubator
Starting a company is a journey filled with both highs and lows. One day, everything feels clear. The next, you find yourself wondering whether you’re really on the right track. That’s exactly why we believe so strongly in mentorship. Not because mentors are there to give you all the answers, but because they can help you ask the right questions, see things from new perspectives, and avoid some of the common mistakes many entrepreneurs make.
In Yuncture’s incubator, mentorship is one of the most important parts of the program. But we don’t pair entrepreneurs and mentors at random. Quite the opposite. We put a lot of time and thought into finding the right match, because we know that having the right person by your side at the right time can make an enormous difference for a startup.
Mentorship Is About People, Not Just Expertise
When people think about mentorship, they often picture someone with years of experience telling them how things should be done. We see it a little differently.
Of course, experience matters. Our mentors have built companies, led organizations, and worked across sales, marketing, law, finance, investments, and international expansion. They’ve been there when things have gone really well, but also when things have been considerably more challenging. It’s precisely that combination that makes their experience so valuable. But personal chemistry is just as important.
Great mentorship is built on trust. Entrepreneurs need to feel comfortable being open, talking about uncertainty, discussing difficult decisions, and sometimes admitting that they simply don’t know what the next step should be. That’s why we don’t just look at what our mentors know. We also consider who they are.
Every Startup Has Different Needs
There really is no such thing as a typical startup. Some come to us with an idea on paper and plenty of energy. Others already have customers and revenue and are thinking about how to grow faster. Some are preparing for their first investment, while others are trying to find the right business model or figure out how to reach the market. That means their needs can look completely different.
An entrepreneur who is just starting a company may primarily need structure, help with prioritization, and someone who can challenge the business idea in a constructive way. Another company might need someone with extensive experience in B2B sales, international expansion, or building organizations.
That’s exactly why there is no one-size-fits-all approach to how we work. We always start with the company and try to understand where the entrepreneur is today, but also where they want to go.
Two Mentors Bring More Perspectives
One thing that makes Yuncture’s incubator a little different is that each company is paired with two mentors. It’s a deliberate choice. No one can be an expert in everything, and entrepreneurship is rarely about tackling just one challenge at a time. By bringing together two people with different backgrounds and experiences, the entrepreneur gains access to more perspectives and broader support.
Most often, the mentors complement each other through different areas of expertise. One may have built several fast-growing companies, while the other has extensive experience in leadership or sales. In other cases, it’s about combining different personalities and ways of thinking. What matters is that the entrepreneur gets a mentorship experience that feels dynamic and helps them grow.
The Matching Process Begins Long Before the Program Starts
When applications for the incubator start coming in, so does our work to understand the entrepreneurs behind them.
Naturally, we look at the business idea and the company’s potential, but we also try to understand the people behind the idea. What drives them? What are their strengths? Where do they feel uncertain? What kind of support will make the biggest difference over the next five months? Only then do we start thinking about the right mentor match.
We consider our mentors’ experience, expertise, and personalities to find combinations that we believe will work really well. The goal isn’t to pair entrepreneurs with someone who agrees with them on everything. Quite the opposite. The best conversations often happen when different perspectives come together.
Mentorship Is About More Than Business Development
Many people assume that mentorship is primarily about business models, budgets, and sales. And of course, we talk about all of those things. But very often, the conversations are about something entirely different. How do you build confidence when everything feels uncertain? How do you prioritize when your to-do list never seems to end? How do you lead a team when you’ve never been a manager before? How do you know when to stick with an idea and when it’s actually time to rethink it?
Entrepreneurship is just as much about personal development as it is about business development. We often say that when the entrepreneur grows, the company tends to grow with them.
A Network That Continues Beyond the Incubator
Another thing that matters to us is that these relationships don’t have to end when the program does. Many of our former entrepreneurs are still in touch with their mentors long after completing the incubator. They continue to bounce ideas off each other, meet for coffee, or reach out when facing an important decision. That’s something we’re very proud of!
For us, Yuncture isn’t about a five-month program followed by a simple “goodbye.” We want to build long-term relationships where people continue to support one another even as the companies grow and move forward.
Why Great Mentorship Works
There really is no magic formula for successful mentorship. It comes down to curiosity, trust, having the courage to challenge without taking over and, perhaps most importantly, listening.
We often say that our mentors rarely give entrepreneurs all the answers. Instead, they help them find their own. And that almost always leads to better results.
Would You Like to Join Yuncture’s Incubator?
If you’re thinking about starting a company, or already run a startup and feel that you could benefit from having experienced people by your side, we think you should take a closer look at Yuncture’s incubator.
Over the course of five months, you’ll be paired with two mentors, gain access to a strong network, attend inspiring lectures, and get a workspace at Yuncture House in the heart of Gothenburg. The program is also completely free of charge, and we don’t take any equity. The only thing we really ask is that you’re prepared to put in the work.
And if you’re curious but not quite sure whether the incubator is right for you yet, get in touch with Nikita.
