From a hacked desk to major investment – Ambidex outgrows Yuncture House

When Ambidex moved into our incubator, they had no customers, no product — not even a PowerPoint. Today, just a couple of years later, they’re moving on after outgrowing both the incubator and our co-working space, Yuncture House. What happened in between? Quite a lot, actually.

Ambidex is developing a hardware module that’s installed in store refrigeration systems. It communicates with both the system’s control unit and a cloud solution that adjusts power consumption based on the current state of the electricity grid — helping to balance the grid and accelerate the green transition.

Two founders, zero slides, and a strong sense of “Let’s Go”

Gustaf and Anton, the founders of Ambidex, entered Yuncture’s incubator with a rough business idea — based on research at Chalmers and their shared time at the School of Entrepreneurship. The path forward wasn’t obvious, but they knew one thing: “We wanted to get off to a running start, not sit in a group room at Chalmers.”

Instead, they landed at Yuncture — with free office space, mentors, sounding boards, and an energy-filled environment buzzing with other startups. “We got so much out of it. Everything from encouragement to support with investor pitches. We didn’t even have our PowerPoint when we started, but we landed our first customer while we were here.”

When the refrigeration system made the desk dance

To test whether their solution actually worked — meaning if the refrigeration systems could be smartly controlled based on the needs of the power grid — they set up a testbed in the incubator. Inside one of our desks. So, as refrigeration systems across the country worked to balance the grid, the desk would move up and down to visualize that the tech was doing its job.

“It was the first time our solution went live. It was pretty late at night. We were alone in the office and accidentally set off the alarm. A classic startup evening.”

New desks, same house

After their time in the incubator, Ambidex chose to stay in the building and move a few floors down — into our co-working space, Yuncture House. That’s where the journey continued, with more meetings, more coffee, and even more development.

“There are so many entrepreneurs here who’ve already made it through different stages of the startup journey. People who’ve shared valuable insights — just from chatting five minutes in the kitchen. That kind of support is hard to find on your own.”

Today, Ambidex has grown from two people and a desk experiment into a company with five employees, a finished product, and a major investment behind them. They’re enabling owners of refrigeration systems to support Sweden’s electricity grid and accelerate the green transition — using something as unexpected as cooling units.

“We’re tapping into an underutilized resource — refrigeration systems — to help stabilize the grid. It might be the reason the energy system can handle the transition. And we want to make that happen as soon as possible.”

It’s not goodbye, it’s see you soon

When we ask Gustaf what he’s learned the most from, he answers without hesitation: “You have to dare. There’s a difference between being a skilled engineer and being an entrepreneur.”

Ambidex is now moving on to larger offices — to keep growing, hire more people, and roll out their solution across Sweden and beyond. Of course, we’re thrilled for them. But yes, it’ll feel a little empty without them.

Good luck, Ambidex — and don’t forget to stop by for a coffee now and then. You’re always welcome back, especially if you get the urge to hack one of our desks again.
